Answers to common questions about the app, and how to reach us.
Permissions
Why does the app ask for location all the time?
Background location lets the app build your heatmap and log your drives while it is closed. On iPhone, open Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Cell Surveys and choose Always. On Android, open Settings › Apps › Cell Surveys › Permissions › Location and choose Allow all the time. With While Using the App, it records only while it is open. On Android a notification shows while collection is running.
Why does it need precise location?
Heatmap squares are small, and the Parcel dashboard grid is 5 meters across, so approximate location would put readings in the wrong place. The app warns you when precise location is off. On iPhone, turn on Precise Location on the same Location Services screen; on Android, turn on Use precise location under the Location permission.
Can I deny a permission?
Yes. You can deny or revoke any permission in your device settings at any time. The features that need it stop working; the rest of the app keeps going.
Data collection
How do I stop data collection?
Turn off Data Collection Consent in the app's Settings. That stops automatic background recording and all uploads. A survey you start yourself still records to your device. Turn the switch back on to resume.
What is uploaded, and who can see it?
Your readings are uploaded to your Cell Surveys account to build your maps, trips, and mileage. Everyone else sees them only in aggregated, anonymized form on the crowd-sourced coverage map, or as part of a fleet's combined heatmap if you join one. There are no ads and we do not sell personal information. The privacy policy has the details.
Cell Surveys Pro and purchases
How do I subscribe to Pro?
Open Settings › Cell Surveys Pro in the app, or tap any Pro feature, and choose monthly ($4.99) or yearly ($39.99). New subscribers may get a 7-day free trial. Apple or Google handles the payment.
How do I restore Pro on a new phone?
Sign in with the same Cell Surveys account: Pro belongs to the account, on iPhone and Android alike. If it doesn't appear, tap Restore purchases in Settings › Cell Surveys Pro while signed in to the App Store or Google Play account that paid.
How do I cancel?
On iPhone: Settings › your name › Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. The Manage subscription button in Settings › Cell Surveys Pro opens the same place. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription.
When does my free early-user Pro end?
Accounts created before Pro launched get it free for their first three months. Settings › Cell Surveys Pro shows the date it ends. It ends on its own, and nothing is charged unless you subscribe.
Mileage and trips
How does mileage tracking work?
With background location allowed and data collection on, the app detects your drives and logs them on its own. Mileage shows a calendar of miles per day and each trip with its times and a route colored by signal. Mark trips Work (anything else counts as Personal), hide trips you don't want counted, and use Export CSV for your records. Mileage is part of Cell Surveys Pro.
A trip is missing or looks wrong. What should I check?
Make sure location is set to Always (Allow all the time on Android) with precise location on, and that Data Collection Consent is on. On Android, set the app's battery usage to Unrestricted so the system doesn't stop it. Mileage figures are estimates from GPS, so check them before relying on them. If a trip still looks wrong, email us the date.
Can I get a weekly or monthly mileage summary?
Yes. Turn on mileage summaries in the app to get a notification with last week's miles on Monday morning and last month's on the 2nd.
Parcels and the Parcel dashboard
How do I lock a parcel?
Tap a parcel on the map and choose Survey This Parcel, or stand inside one on foot and it locks on its own after a few readings. Then tap Parcel to open its dashboard. Parcels come from county records and cover most of the U.S.
What does the Parcel dashboard show?
Signal across the parcel on a 2D grid of 5-meter squares, and a 3D view that stacks the squares by floor (from barometric pressure) or by altitude. Choose the time window, read the signal distribution and reading counts, and see the parcel's property details where the county publishes them.
Exporting your data
How do I export my surveys?
Open a survey from Archives and use its share button to export it as CSV; Android can also export a ZIP of the whole session. You can turn on Google Drive backup in Settings to keep copies of your survey files in your own Drive.
How do I export my trips?
In Mileage, use Export CSV. The file has one row per trip in the month you are viewing: date, start and end times and addresses, miles, and the Work or Personal label.
Your account
How do I delete my account?
In the app, open Settings, tap Delete account, and confirm. Deletion starts right away. If you can't open the app, email us from your account's address. The delete account page lists exactly what is deleted and what is kept.
Where did the web dashboards go?
The mileage and parcel web dashboards are moving into the app: Mileage and the Parcel dashboard are built into the latest versions for iPhone and Android, with the same data. The web versions will be retired once the app versions have been out for a while.
